WordPress 3.0 Is Out!

Posted by | Posted in Geek Stuff, Technology | Posted on 18-06-2010

I can’t remember how long it’s been since a major version of WordPress came out. There was the upgrade from 2.0 to 2.5, and then to 2.6, each bringing new features and whatnot, but now 3.0 is finally out of beta, and I’m using it right now, baby!

There doesn’t seem to be many new features right off the bat, other than a few design changes. But reading an article or two over at Mashable will soon enlighten you to the major new features. The basic gist is:

  • Custom Post Types
  • New menu management system
  • New default theme
  • WordPress and WordPress MU are now merged
  • New custom taxanomies (like ‘tags’ or ‘categories’)

As this is the first little play I’e had with WP 3.0 I’ve not had the chance to see how the extensions work with the new installation, but I’m sure things will come out of the woodwork soon enough. All in all though, everything seems to be working perfectly after using the automatic upgrade option from within WordPress itself.

In other news, I’m actually spending a fair amount of time developing a website I’ve been meaning to build for some time now. It’s coming along nicely, and I’m sure I’ll post a link to it when I have something worth showing the world. I’m hoping it carves a small niche for itself in the┬ácompetitive┬ámarket that it’ll be competing in, but first and foremost I’m simply building the site for the practice.

England’s second World Cup game is on TV tonight, and I’m sure I’ll be watching it. I’m not much of a football fan, but I’ll support my country like any good patriot! We didn’t do as well as we should have done in our first game, thanks to a slight “mishap” by the keeper on our end, but the next couple of games should hopefully be fine, and we’ll make it through the group stages. I guess we’ll soon see.

Lost of stuff going on at the E3 expo at the moment (unless it’s finished already) including some game trailers for Portal 2 and Deus Ex 3 – two games I can’t wait for.
