Might Get A Word In…

Morning all! With any luck I might actually get to write a complete blog entry today!

Well as I’m sure you’ve all heard by now, Jade Goody/Tweed/Whatever passed away in the early hours of yesterday morning. Now, I’ve never been a fan of the woman, but as I’ve said before I wouldn’t wish cancer on anyone, and I imagine that her friends and family are devistated, and so my thoughts go out to them.

Being my usual self, and despite the grim nature of the news, I almost went off on one of my typical rants about the whole subject of Jade Goody. I was going to mention that since she learnt of the cancer, she’s milked it as much as she can. I was going to say that Jack Tweed was her ex-boyfriend, until he learned that she was dying, and then all of a sudden there are wedding bells ringing. And I was also going to mention that OK Magazine paid a reported £700,000 to cover the wedding.

However, I’m not going to go on about that for two reasons. The first is that if I were in that situation, and I was able to keep making money right up until my death (and after it, I would imagine) then I’m almost 100% sure I would. On top of that, Jade has two children to look after, and as she won’t be around to make sure they get the childhood and education that they should, I’m sure a few million pounds in magazine deals (and continuing royalties from perfume sales etc) should set them up with a good future. And then, of course, there’s Jack The Lad who’s now responsible for them… heaven help them. (It’s OK, I can take the piss out of him because he isn’t dead).

I have to hand it to Jade – she’s probably sorted her kid’s futures out far better than your average parent is able to, despite being cancer-ridden and devoid of many common sense and intelligence genes. No offense to other cancer sufferers, of course – I’m sure you’ve all done a fantastic job. Thankfully, though, Jade was in a position to take care of her children long after she’s passed away, which I guess you could argue is a sign of being a great parent.

So, rest in peace Jade. For all the insulting mutterings I may have uttered under my breath whilst watching you get your kit off on national TV, or slagging off Shilpa Shetty like a schoolgirl, I still think that you’ve accomplished what all parents would hope they could do were they in your position, so hats off to you. I’m sure you’ll be remembered for a long time to come.

Ahh. Now that that’s out of the way, I can get onto other news. Having said that, I’m not sure what other news there is, as I’ve been too busy at work to check. I did notice that Internet Explorer 8 has been officially released. I have to admit to not even trying out the betas of IE8, which for a web developer is rather disgraceful. However, I’ve got it installed now, and while I haven’t used it much so far, I have used it for testing purposes and it performs really quite well. Usually, while developing a website, I find that the other browsers generally behave how I’d expect them to given the code I write, but Internet Explorer will sometimes have issues. This weekend, however, I’ve found that IE8 rendered webpages in the exact same way as the other browsers, which is great.

However, IE6 also rendered the pages in the same way as the other browsers, so I guess it’s rather an unfair test. It did load a lot quicker than IE7 though. Overall, I quite like IE8, and I believe the CSS support and general rendering engine of the browser is now on par with the other major browsers. I also secretly like the fact that, in some areas, it’s not even playing catch-up with the other browsers… it’s actually adding functionality that other browsers don’t have. Web Slices and Accelerators are but a couple of new features, as are grouped tabs.

There’s no update on the American Road Trip situation so far. I still need to buy myself a camera, and I’m still going to go for the Nikon D40. Thankfully it’s payday this week, so I maight just wait until then before buying it. That, coupled with the price of the flights and my rent this month, will probably take up most of this month’s pay check. Having said that, this month is the first month that my pay rise will take effect, and so I don’t actually know how much I’ll get until I see it in my bank. Man, I love payday!

Someone needs to slap me around the head or something I think. I’ve got no idea how long it takes to learn to drive, right from taking your first lesson to actually passing your test, and so I really need to get a move on. I’m going to spend this week learning the theory test part, and hopefully get something booked by the end of the week. Then it’ll be straight onto the lessons.

I’m thinking that I’ll need 2-hour lessons (as most people have) and I’ll probably need two lessons a week. That’s £100 a week for driving lessons, which is ludicrous. However, it has to be done, and despite it me doing it specifically for the road trip, I can justify it slightly because it’ll be something that’ll be with me for the rest of my life. So for an initial cost, I’ll have learnt something very valuable. At least, that’s what I’m telling myself…

UPDATE: Woo! This is my 100th blog post! It’s a shame it had to be about the death of a celebrity, though. It’s also strange (and yet mildly amusing) that I categorized this post under ‘Entertainment‘. An unfortunate mishap!
