It’s All Fun and Games

Sorry about the complete lack of updates – I’ve been a bit busy with other things. Anyways, on with the show!

Google rolled out a couple of nifty new features/updates to Gmail last week. The first was adding free Google Voice calls to US and Canadian landlines. Apparently it went down really well, and within 24 hours they’d had over 2 million calls made using the service. They made a slight boo boo at first though, as they ended up rolling out the service to every English-speaking country in the world, when it was only supposed to be rolled out to the US and Canada!

I woke up that morning to find that I, too, could place calls for free, but by the time I came to trying it out, Google had fixed the problem. But don’t worry! Us poor UKers (and the rest of the world) will get the service soon, although for a (small) price.

Some big news I read about this weekend (well, big for me anyways) is that Duke Nukem Forever is actually getting a release next year! It’s already 13 years late, and after numerous scraps and restarts, and after the original developers threw in the towel last year, it’s being picked up by Gearbox Studios and is getting a release “sometime in 2011”. Awesome news!

I’ve been a fan of Duke since 1995 when Duke Nukem 3D came out. Duke Forever was supposed to be released in 1997, but it never materialised.  A few screenshots of it appeared in 2001, but since then, nothing. A lot of the original developers from 3DRealms will be working at Gearbox to create the game, so at least they know the game. Let’s just hope they don’t bring with them anything that might hinder the game, as has happened so many times over the last 15 years.

I’m excited though. Along with Half Life 2: Episode 3, and Deus Ex: Human Revolution, there are gonna be some kick arse games coming in the next 18 months or so.
